It’s been an interesting first year for Little Cocoa – meeting with clients, organising deliveries, attending networking events and collaborating with other small businesses.

It highlights the fact that business is about people as much as products. It also made us think about some of the many people who contribute to business success. Who’s in your business or professional network that you’d like to that, recognise or celebrate?

Mentors. At a personal level, who’s the person who been a role model, a confidante, an advisor – someone who inspired you to give it a go? Mentors are often former colleagues or business associates and it’s a valuable relationship you want to continue to grow.

Project teams. Everyone really had to pull together and log some crazy hours to get this critical job done. Above and beyond. All for one and one for all. Now it’s wrapped up, it’s time to thank people for their contribution.

Board members. Whether your board members are paid, receive an honorarium or are volunteers, they play an important role in guiding and building your organisation. Celebrate them at their next meeting or recognise the service of an outgoing member.

Guest speakers. You’ve invited them in for a keynote presentation at your monthly meeting or annual conference. And they’ve been more than generous in sharing their knowledge, time and expertise. Reciprocate their generosity with a public display of appreciation. 

The committee queen. Every workplace has one. That person who organises flowers, cards, Melbourne Cup sweeps and social functions – the often overlooked tasks that can foster a sense of community in a busy work environment.

External providers. Does your business rely on freelancers and casuals to get you through the busy times or consultants to provide specialised skills? A simple gesture of acknowledgement will help keep them coming back.

The intern. We know how much time it can take to host a student in a work placement but they came for the experience and brought with them fresh ideas and energy. Show them it’s been a two-way learning street and they’ll become your advocates.
